Having trouble selling your home? Don't do a Lenny Dykstra.

Does tobacco juice count as an "unmentionable"?

There’s a good post today titled “Dykstra Mansion on the Market for $14.9 Million” on the WSJ’s Bankruptcy Beat.

A couple points worth noting about Dykstra’s approach to home care for a property he originally tried to sell for $25 million:

“The home was littered throughout with empty beer bottles, trash, dog feces and urine and other unmentionables,” according to Brian Dubois of American Holdings & Land, a company hired by Dykstra’s bankruptcy trustee to maintain the property.

“The house was left by Mr. Dykstra in an unshowable state, with raw sewage escaping from the main drain line left undone,” Dubois said in court papers.

The message is clear:  DON’T DO A LENNY DYKSTRA! (Especially if you need to generate cash from the sale of your home.)

Even if you’re losing control of your home, there are still plenty of reasons to maintain the home in good condition.  Most of those reasons are green and have pictures of U.S. Presidents on them.

Of course, this should just be common sense.  But I wanted to make the point that even if you’re in danger of being foreclosed upon, you still need to take the necessary steps for upkeep of your home.

The other point I wanted to make is:  Poor Wayne Gretzky.  All the guy did was originally own this house that Dykstra eventually bought.  And every time there’s another crazy article about Dykstra’s financial mess, The Great One’s name gets taken along for the ride.
