Time for another edition of Brooklyn Bankruptcy Update, a look at the latest Bankruptcy news and happenings out of the County of Kings (aka Brooklyn).
- “Fraudulent nursing school files for bankruptcy: Students left holding the bag at Brooklyn-based Envision Review Center Inc.“ (Crain’s New York Business) – The nursing school, located on 1894 Flatbush Avenue, primarily catered to the Caribbean community and was apparently the subject of a “Shame On You” Fox 5 news segment earlier this year. The Chapter 7 Brooklyn bankruptcy listed assets of $1,000 and liabilities of $630,000.
- “Granddaughter, lawyer scammed 80-year-old granny out of her Brooklyn home, suit says” (Press Reader) – According to the owner of a Carroll Gardens brownstone who was facing foreclosure, her lawyer and her daughter (who reputedly is connected to the Gambino crime family) had her sell them the house for $200,000 when its actual value is around $1.7 million.
- “Bank Aid Pushed for Homeowners” (Wall Street Journal Online) – Brooklyn City Council member Brad Lander, along with State Senator Jeff Klein, have proposed legislation that would give banks an incentive to pursue mortgage modifications with troubled New York homeowners rather than foreclose on the homes.
- “Brooklyn Agencies Receive Funds for Subprime Foreclosure PreventionPrograms” (Brooklyn Eagle) – The boards of state housing agencies approved $18.4 million in grants for affordable housing and foreclosure prevention in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx, Long Island and Upstate New York. Under the Subprime Foreclosure Prevention Program, $593,862 will go to South Brooklyn Legal Services, $79,300 to the Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union and $289,536 to the Bridge Street Development Corp.
