2.\u00a0 The next step is calls from a collection agency.\u00a0 This happens when your creditor decides it won’t be able to collect the debt itself and sells your debt to a third-party collection agency.\u00a0 These guys are professionals and know how to scare people into paying.\u00a0 They will likely call you often over the next 90 days.\u00a0 Again, this may be very personally stressful for you.\u00a0 However, legally they’re not allowed to make threats or say anything to you that’s not true.\u00a0 Also, you can write a letter to them requesting that they no longer call you, and they are legally obligated to honor that request.\u00a0 (Of course, that doesn’t mean they always do.)\u00a0 The long and the short of this, however, is that the collection agencies do not handle the wage garnishment.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Payroll garnishment eventually happens if the collection agency gives up and decides to hand over your case to a wage garnishment attorney who handles these kinds of cases every day.\u00a0 The first step by the lawyer will be to sue you.\u00a0 That will enable them to get a judgment from the court permiting them to garnish your wages if you still have not paid your debt.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 The only strategy at that point for halting a wage garnishment would be to file for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n
