I came across these Japanese mortgage refinance TV ads and thought they were worth sharing. They don’t provide much in the way of educational value. But they are entertaining and they do remind us that people in other countries also have mortgages and deal with the same kinds of problems.
That said, it’s also a good opportunity to point out that the U.S. has by far the most progressive and forward-thinking bankruptcy laws. In Japan and elsewhere, it’s harder for individuals (and companies for that matter) to file for bankruptcy. As a result, bankruptcy filing is less common and carries a greater stigma than it does in the U.S.
Is that such a positive that more people feel ok about filing for bankruptcy in the U.S.? Yes. Because that’s what encourages risk and innovation, and that’s what enables the U.S. economy to be as dynamic, strong and resilient as it is. And as bad as the U.S. economy has been the last few years, there’s also a great deal of forward progress and adaption occurring that will contribute greatly to the recovery of our economy.
When we reach that point (and we will), make sure to thank the U.S. bankruptcy laws for playing their part in helping us get there.
Now back to the Japanese mortgage commercials:
